L’hôtel de type

I arrived home today after travelling the length of France to northern Spain. I didn’t pass through Paris on this trip but after discovering Mama Shelter on my return, I wish I had.

Designed by Philippe Starck, and located in Paris’s 20th arrondissement in the east, the hotel’s interior is covered in lettering and type. Graffitied blackboard ceilings where the lettering runs onto the walls, type bedecked carpets and in the bedrooms. I need to go back — soon!

Skull-ptures

Hedi Xandt is a German-born artist that mixes styles and materials with talent. The artist invites the viewer to discover his dark and intense universe with his new macabre artwork. The above pieces are a series that the artist refers to as “skull-ptures”. They combine the aesthetics of naturally shaped bone with state-of-the-art and experimental production techniques. The pieces remind me of the old craniometers that were used to measure the external dimensions of skulls.
